Explore the land where the sun first rises. Here an empire was born. And great kingdoms crushed. The first land of the New World boasts a shore line and ocean filled with dreams and pirates and princes and has marched to the drumbeat of human history for 8000 years.
This is the first outpost of Europe's North American frontier and the first contact point with the aboriginals. The first and only New World home of the Vikings; settled at a King's command almost a century before Jamestown. The first landfall for the Mayflower and the first mountains of Appalachia. Here a thousand whalers fought bloody battles with ocean giants decades before the first buffalo was shot. This was the destination of the first transatlantic cruise ship and the final resting place of the Titanic. Here there are a thousand tales waiting for a willing ear.
Our first land is where great currents collide and where the world has fished for over 500 years. This is a land of springtime polar bears and icebergs. And autumn sea turtles and sunfish. Here there are more humpbacks, eagles, whales, and puffins than anywhere else. The world's largest animal swims the coastline. And in the offshore depths the world's largest sea monster lurks in the darkness. Today people still come to explore, exploit, and remember. These are the stories we share on our escorted adventures which are suitable for anybody with a curious mind and a sense of fun. Active 80 year olds are as welcome as the 30 year olds who select us to host their first escorted vacation.
Western Newfoundland is where the earth shows its bones. At Gros Morne you can view 200 million year old fossils and billion year old landscapes. We walk on the interior of the earth and learn about the birth of a continent and the death of an ancient ocean. Time travellers can venture north with us to explore the lOth century home of the Norse and on to southern Labrador to view the New World's oldest burial mound. And we don't forget the 1560 World Whaling Capital where thousands laboured to slaughter the great whales whose oil lit the lamps of the Renaissance.
When in Newfoundland and Labrador look out to sea to view members of the world's largest gathering of acrobatic humpback whales. And enjoy the company of the continent's largest gatherings of puffins and kittiwakes. There is also the world's largest gatherings of murres, azorbills and Leach's storm petrels. The land is home to the world's largest caribou herd, Earth's largest black bears, and some of the planet's densest gatherings of moose.

To the north of the Ranch lays the small community of Big Creek with a population of 50 or so people. In all other directions the land is uninhabited, and still untouched like it was thousands of years ago. There are no cities or towns all the way to the coast, so that the clean Pacific air flows through untainted by any pollution.
To share this once in a life time experience of this land with other people, we built our first cabin for guests. From the first day it was a success. Our guests loved the fresh, unpolluted air, the absolute peace and quiet of the cabin, adding to this even more by the tranquil rushing of the Big Creek. Everywhere there are all sorts of different animals, which of, the vibrant humming bird is loved the most.
The stress and woes of the city are left behind as you watch the busy beaver naw away at trees, and the magnificent eagle fish for his daily meal, you won't remember the last time you had such relaxation like here in Big Creek. Now and then a nice horse back ride or a peaceful fishing trip along the creek will be a good change in the menu. If the weather is to bad for any outside activities then there is always the pool table or any of the other games in the game room.
The Big Creek Lodge consists of massive white cedar logs, that are only found on the Pacific Coast of B.C. From the first cut to the last nail took a good four years. In this time we worked shifts from dusk till dawn. Skilled carpenters where just too hard to find, so we had to employ the help of local natives who where unskilled. Sometimes guests with a little skill would be happy to help out.
The Lodge has been classified as a Canada select Four Star “Country Inn“ and it is the only four star Country Inn in this region. We are thankful and strive to not only give this quality but to expand it. Staying in a four star Country Inn is not only outstanding and better than staying in a regular Canadian accommodation but that's not all of it. A vacation is entirely what you do during this time, from a daily impression, from little to great adventures, from having conversations with people on your level, and now and then the immeasurable pleasure of doing absolutely nothing. The delight of being on vacation is that you can read a book, bath in the sun and not have to worry about anything.

A group of local citizens keen to promote tourism formed the Klondike Visitors' Association in the late 1950s. Recognizing that gambling was a major part of Dawson’s Gold Rush history, the association obtained a special gambling licence from the Canadian Government and in the early 1970s began running casino nights on the dry-docked S.S. Keno.
Today, Dawson City’s world famous non-profit gambling hall is named after bona fide dance hall queen Diamond Tooth Gertie. During the Gold Rush of 1898, in order to distinguish herself from numerous Klondike kings and queens, Gertie Lovejoy wedged a sparkling diamond between her two front teeth. Any discomfort this caused paid dividends. Instead of working the creeks for her riches, Diamond Tooth Gertie made her fortune by mining the lonely prospectors who readily opened their gold pokes in return for her affections. In Dawson City today, Gertrude Lovejoy’s moniker lives on at the town-run Diamond Tooth Gertie's Casino.
Replete with cancan dancers and a singing master of ceremonies named Gertie, Canada’s oldest gambling hall gives you a chance to re-live the heady days of Dawson’s Gold Rush era. With three nightly shows by Gertie and her Gertie Girls, Diamond Tooth Gertie's is today a fixture of fun-filled entertainment where patrons can enjoy a beverage while playing blackjack, roulette, Texas Hold'em poker and an array of glittering slot machines.
